The Side Effects of Nasal Irrigation
Nasal irrigation is a centuries-old practice that has been practiced in India as part of the teachings of yoga. The practice is growing more popular in the West, as well. The practice of nasal irrigation involves using a mild saline solution and a vessel (usually a neti pot) to wash the nasal passages and sinuses. While there are no inherent negative side effects associated with using a neti pot, there can be some unpleasant side effects if the neti pot is used incorrectly.

Discomfort of the nostrils and sinuses

If the water temperature used in the neti pot is too hot or too cold, it could cause discomfort in the nose and sinuses. To test the temperature of the water, splash a few drops on your inner wrist. If it feels cold or hot, it will cause pain or discomfort in your sinuses and/or nostrils. The water should be warm--body temperature.
Resulting Infections

Because a neti pot is used to flush water through your nasal passages and sinuses, it's of utmost importance to keep the vessel clean and sanitized. If left wet or damp, bacteria and mold could begin to form in the neti pot. This could result in pouring these bacteria and molds directly into your sinuses the next time you use the neti pot.

Ear Discomfort or Pain

Improper use of a neti pot could result in pressure or discomfort in the ear. The saline solution could also back up into the ear. This fluid in the ear could lead to infection.

To care for your pot correctly, dry it completely after each use with a clean, lint-free cloth. Before each use, sanitize your neti pot with a gentle soap (such as Dr. Bronner's organic soap) and white vinegar. Rinse well before filling with the saline solution.
