Positive & Negative Side Effects of DHEA Supplements

DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, is a hormone excreted by the body, but the levels decrease with age. It has been suggested that DHEA supplements can fight depression, increase weight loss, slow the aging process and increase sex drive. Is it all hype?

Here's the facts about DHEA, which may help you decide if DHEA supplementation is right for you.

  1. Effects of DHEA

    • Some users of DHEA proclaim it as the "youth supplement" because it can have the effect of increased libido, smoother skin and diminished menopause symptoms. It is also commonly taken to increase mental clarity, assist with erectile dysfunction and build the immune system.

These claims are not always supported by scientific evidence.

    Dose

    • DHEA should never be used on children under the age of 18.

Adult dosage is commonly between 20-50 mg per day. It is available in tablets or capsule form. Taking too large a dose of DHEA can cause growth of facial hair, increase perspiration and acne.

    Decreased DHEA levels

    • DHEA begins to decrease after age 30 in both males and females. DHEA levels can also be depleted in the body by use of opiates, insulin, danazol and corticosteroids.

    Sources of DHEA

    • DHEA is produced in the body in the adrenal gland, testicles and in the brain.

DHEA that is synthetically made from wild yam extract cannot be converted into DHEA in the body, so companies that market wild yam DHEA as natural DHEA are in error.

    Warnings

    • You should always consult with your physician before starting supplementation with DHEA. Because it can increase hormone levels of estrogen and testosterone, prolonged use could stimulate breast and ovarian cancers and testicular cancer.
