Eczema is a condition that causes skin lesions and blisters. Also known as dermatitis, this skin condition can be caused by a variety of things, including allergies and dry skin. Inflamed areas on the body will appear irritated, dry, red and patchy. The skin will be intensely itchy and can even break open and become infected. But even though eczema is extremely bothersome and there is no definitive cure, there are numerous medical treatments and at-home treatments available that can bring you relief.

  1. Be Good to Your Skin

    • One way to treat your eczema at home is to keep your skin moisturized. That means taking warm showers, not hot ones, and using only mild soaps and lotions that do not contain fragrances or preservatives. Following a shower, dry off gently by patting the skin, and apply lotion right away to your entire body.

    Avoid Allergens

    • Another way to control or treat eczema at home is to avoid any and everything that irritates your skin. If you know what causes your dermatitis, avoid it like the plague. You may need to change your shampoo or laundry detergent. You may find that you can't have a certain pet. Or, handling certain chemicals may cause the reaction. It really depends on your body and your reaction to various substances. If you notice that your eczema becomes worse after coming into contact with a particular substance, do your best to avoid it.

    Avoid Tight Clothing

    • If you have eczema, don't wear tight clothing if you can help it. Tight clothes can cause your skin to sweat or chaff, which actively irritates your rash or blisters, prolonging the condition. Rough clothing that itches or scratches the skin also should be avoided. Likewise, don't perform repetitive movements like running or other exercise when suffering from a major outbreak, as this can just exacerbate the condition.

    Avoid Scratching

    • Even though eczema can make your skin unbearably itchy, you should never, ever scratch the area. This can cause the skin to crack and bleed. It also may cause the rash to linger for much longer. In addition, infection can be introduced to the area by your fingernails.

    Avoid Stress

    • Another good way to treat eczema on your own is to take time for yourself and avoid stressful situations. This means adopting a generally healthy lifestyle. Eat a nutritious and balanced diet, exercise regularly and make sure you get plenty of sleep each night. Doing these simple tasks can help you stay healthy, which makes your body heal faster and helps you avoid stress, all of which keep your eczema at bay.
