Early Life
-
Dalhart Windberg was born 1933 in Goliad County, Texas. He was named after a popular entertainer, Vernon Dalhart. He spent his youth in the windswept wilds of Texas, admiring the natural beauty of the desert wildlife and flowers. This landscape was to influence his artwork.
Army Days
-
Dalhart joined the Army and did a tour of duty in war ravished Europe. Too young to serve in WWII, he was there to see its aftermath. Burned out buildings, collapsed shells of once great city, bodies piled up high and deep. It was an experience he would never forget. After coming home, he began working and painting.

Learning to Paint
-
He studied under Texas painter Simon Michael who helped Dalhart focus his painting on the windswept landscapes that he loved so much. In 1967, he started painting full time. By 1972, Windberg was in the American Masters Foundation. He was the only member. In 1979 he was named Texas State Artist. In his most prolific period, '71 to '78, he sold 57 paintings. He is still painting and selling his work, with over 240 paintings to his name.
Art Style
-
Windberg's style is immediately recognizable. His intricate, detailed, and life-like renditions of the Texan landscape won him quick acclaim. His use of bright, bold colors helps accentuate the natural beauty that comes so easily to a desert landscape. His subject matter is diverse. Amongst his paintings are painstaking recreations of the Rocky Mountains. The forest remain a popular Windberg favorite. Perhaps his most famous subject are the dunes of the Texas desert. He would work for hours every day painting; each painting shows an attention to detail, shade and coloring that is extremely precise.
Smooth Canvas Method
-
Windberg invented a technique that could help him paint faster, while maintaining the look and detail of the finest painters. He uses diluted modeling paste to prepare the surface of each of his paintings. With this smooth surface, Windberg could get paint on the canvas quicker and with more precision. He wrote and self-published a book, "The Windberg Technique of Oil Painting," about his technique and many artists have adopted this technique.

I have a beautiful still life which I bought from Mr. Windberg in 1968, a wine glass and red apple against a dark background. I was impressed by how well he painted glass. I'm not sure, but this may have been before he started selling prints of his works.
