What Are BDU's?
Battle Dress Uniforms (BDUs) were originally created to be worn by military men during battle. Today, they are not only worn by our service men and women, but also by police, fire and emergency personnel. BDUs have been modified since their first introduction before World War II.

History

BDUs were worn in World War II by the Army and Marines. They were pulled from use in mid-1940 because their green sateen material made it difficult to distinguish U.S. from German troops. However, in 1968, Special Forces were issued camouflage rip-stop BDUs in Vietnam. It became standard for military personnel to wear a four-color blend of two shades of green, brown and black. Military forces were issued two types of BDUs: a lighter, warm-weather design and a heavier cotton winter-weather design.
New BDU

The Hot Weather BDU (HWBDU) is issued for desert and tropical climates. In 1996, a new BDU was created with blend of 50/50 rip-stop nylon and cotton poplin. This new blend was a more durable, longer lasting material. Military personnel needed more protection from the elements, no matter the climate.
Types

BDUs come in camouflage patterns and are used for many different situations.
Regular 3-color green
Desert 3-color green, tan, black
Desert 6-color browns, tans, blacks
General 3-color green, tan, brownBDUs are also made in patterns such as tree bark or jungle foliage. These are specific to a region, cannot be worn in general environments and are not standard issue.
Uniforms

According to military rule, BDUs are to be worn as utility, field, training or combat uniforms only. They are not to be worn while off duty or during leisure time. BDUs may only be worn off military installations during travel to and from work, or during brief breaks while on duty. BDUs are also not authorized in an establishment where alcohol is the primary business.
Fire, Police, Emergency Personnel

BDUs are worn by fire, police and emergency personnel as a regular part of their uniform. For the most part, they wear standard issue shirts and BDU pants. The main advantage of BDUs for these personnel is the storage. There are many more pockets to carry knives, scissors, tape, and other necessary items for their particular job requirements.
