Natural Cures for Fatty Liver Disease

Being obese and eating an unhealthy diet contributes to a range of health problems, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Additionally, an unhealthy lifestyle increases your risk of developing fatty liver--a condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver. Fatty liver can develop gradually, and the condition rarely causes symptoms. When symptoms do occur, you may feel fatigue or notice pain in the upper right side of your abdomen. If left untreated, fatty liver can lead to permanent liver damage. But home remedies or natural cures can effectively reverse the condition.

  1. Maintain Healthy Body Weight

    • Overweight people have a higher risk of developing fatty liver. To lower your risk, maintain a healthy weight. Talk to your doctor about an ideal weight based on your sex and height. Next, take steps to achieve and keep this ideal weight.

    Reduce Fat Intake

    • In conjunction with losing weight, alter your eating habits and significantly reduce your intake of fatty foods, high-calorie foods and sugars. Opt for healthy alternatives such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Other healthy choices include whole grains, nuts, fish and low-calorie, sugar-free snacks.

    Get Active

    • Physical activity or exercise lowers blood triglycerides and reduces body fat. In turn, being active can reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver and reverse fatty liver. Along with a healthy diet and regular exercise, you'll lose weight, and this will make it easier for you to maintain a healthy weight. For the best results, exercise for 30 to 60 minutes three to five times a week.

    Limit Use of Medications

    • Overuse or long-term use of certain medications can cause liver damage. And if you're dealing with fatty liver, these medications can slow your recovery and cause further liver damage. Read the warnings on prescription and non-prescription medications, and avoid medications that increase the risk of liver damage. Talk to your doctor about alternative drugs.

    Avoid Alcohol

    • Over-consumption of alcohol can contribute to and aggravate the symptoms of fatty liver. To reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver and reverse any liver damage, eliminate alcohol from your diet. Talk with your doctor before resuming alcohol consumption.
