Preparation
-
Prior to adding any chemicals to a spa the owner should be completely familiar with how their particular brand and model of spa works and to follow all of the manufacturer's instructions. Before adding chemicals the first time it is important to start with fresh water. The water in the spa should be drained and refreshed every three months, depending on how frequently the spa is used. Clean the surface area with a solution of one-fourth cup bleach to 1.5 gallons of water. Rinse the bleach solution completely with fresh, clean water and towel dry.
pH Levels
-
Fill the spa up to the water line with fresh, clean water. Activate the spa's water heater and allow the water to reach approximately 80 degrees. Test the water for pH levels. The preferred level should range from 7.6 to 8.2. Adjust the pH level by adding either pH Increaser or pH Decreaser. Retest the water after 30 minutes and continue adjusting until the pH is at the proper level.

Alkalinity Levels
-
Test the water for alkalinity levels. Adjust the level with alkaline control chemicals until the level settles at 100. Add spa water clarifier to the water according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Hardness Levels
-
Test the water for hardness. The preferred level of hardness is from 100 to 200 parts per million (ppm). Water that is too hard or too soft can damage pipes and equipment of the spa. Adjust the water by adding a calcium hardness treatment or a scale inhibitor treatment.
Sanitizers
-
Sanitize your spa water utilizing the method recommended by your spa's manufacturer. Sanitizing is typically accomplished by adding either chlorine or bromine to the water. It is important to never combine these two chemicals.
