Nummular eczema, an inflammatory disease of the skin, received its name due to its peculiar look. This particular form of eczema forms coin-shaped lesions on the skin. (In Latin, the word "nummular" means coin.) The rash is most often found on the arms, buttocks, back or lower legs. As these lesions age, they may become scaly and crusty, resembling psoriasis or ringworm. Nummular eczema is a chronic condition that may worsen or get better over a period of time, but there is no cure for it. In fact, the cause of this relatively uncommon condition is still unknown, but a number of factors acting alone or together have been suspected.

    Dry Skin

  1. Individuals who suffer from chronic and excessive dry skin seem more susceptible to this particular type of eczema. Frequent bathing also worsens the condition, suggesting that dry skin may play a role in causing it.
  2. Sensitive Skin

  3. Nummular eczema occurs more often in people with sensitive skin. Irritants will frequently worsen the itching and inflammation. Individuals who have skin reactions to stiffer fabrics, harsh soaps and detergents, or particular chemicals are more likely to suffer from nummular eczema at some point.
  4. Changes in Weather

  5. Sudden changes in weather or great fluctuation between hot and cold temperatures seem to exacerbate symptoms. Individuals who already suffer from dry skin, and live in an environment with low humidity and sudden temperature changes are more susceptible to this eczema.
  6. Family History

  7. It is not uncommon for an individual suffering from nummular eczema to have family members who struggle with inflammatory skin conditions as well.
  8. History of Other Allergies

  9. Those who suffer from nummular eczema may have pre-existing conditions such as atopic dermatitis, asthma or other allergies. Any of these allergies increase the risk of developing this particular type of eczema.
  10. Medication Allergy

  11. It has been suggested that nummular eczema is an allergic reaction to particular types of medication. For instance, patients taking the prescription Isotretinoin to treat acne are more likely to suffer from this skin irritation.
  12. Bacterial Infection

  13. Suggestions have also been made to link nummular eczema with bacterial infections. Bacterial infections often cause a hypersensitivity reaction in the skin, causing everyday products to become highly irritating.
