- Individuals who suffer from chronic and excessive dry skin seem more susceptible to this particular type of eczema. Frequent bathing also worsens the condition, suggesting that dry skin may play a role in causing it.

- It has been suggested that nummular eczema is an allergic reaction to particular types of medication. For instance, patients taking the prescription Isotretinoin to treat acne are more likely to suffer from this skin irritation.
- Suggestions have also been made to link nummular eczema with bacterial infections. Bacterial infections often cause a hypersensitivity reaction in the skin, causing everyday products to become highly irritating.
