What Supplies Do You Need to Survive in Space?

If one of your children asks you what do you need to survive in space, your first response might be, “Why do you ask?” Once you have determined that a backyard launch isn't scheduled, you can move on to the matter at hand, which is a pretty down-to-earth one when you think about it. After all, we’re surviving in space now, on our own Spaceship Earth.

  1. Air to Breathe

    • Let’s assume you’re going to be visiting space in some sort of spacecraft. The list of supplies must start with oxygen. The Earth’s atmosphere is roughly 78 percent nitrogen and nearly 21 percent oxygen, with little bits of other gases mixed in. It’s the oxygen we use from this mix, so you need equipment to create oxygen. An electrolysis system similar to the one used on the International Space Station will work.

    Protection from the Elements

    • You’ll need a space suit if you plan to go outside your space vehicle. It’s cold out there, so you’ll need some sort of garment to keep your body temperature near normal. In addition, you'll need pressure to keep your body together in the vacuum of space. And of course, there is the issue of dangerous radiation. Stay inside or take a high-quality space suit to protect your body.

    Food and Water

    • Just as on Earth, you’ll need food and water. Your body is mostly water and your brain is almost all water (95 percent), so you’ll need plenty of water to stay healthy. Your best bet is to start out with a good supply of water, learn to ration it and recycle every drop you can. The International Space Station uses a water purification system to recycle water from all kinds of sources.

    Day-to-Day Needs

    • You’ll need supplies for daily life. Because you’ll be living without the benefit of gravity, you’ll need a place to sleep anchored to something solid. A special bed, bunk or bag will work to keep you from bouncing off the walls while you sleep. You only have one set of choppers, so take a couple of toothbrushes and care for them. And your fellow travelers will appreciate it if you take soap.

    Tools

    • You’re going to need tools because things break or come loose. It’s always a good idea to have a screwdriver and a pair of needle-nose pliers handy, and you’re surely going to need other tools as well. In space, you’ll want magnetic tools that will hang on to your nuts and bolts as you work.
