Toddler Stomach Ache Home Remedies

Toddler stomach aches can be frustrating for both parent and toddler. Stomach pains can result from common causes such as overeating or a bacterial infection. They can also be caused by nerves or anxiety. When a toddler's stomach seems distended or if they are pulling their legs into their abdomen, it could be a sign of stomach trouble. Many times a stomach ache isn't cause for alarm and a home remedy can be beneficial.

  1. Ginger

    • Grate a small amount of ginger into warm water and allow it to steep. Ginger makes a soothing tea that will ease an upset stomach. Toddlers may not enjoy the taste, but it is a safe way to help a stomach ache. Ginger is a natural digestive aid that eases motion sickness, pregnancy nausea and upset stomach. Ginger should not be used on children younger than 2. Flat ginger ale can also help ease stomach troubles.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda is a natural digestive aid and helps alleviate minor stomach pains. Large amounts of baking soda should not be given to children younger than 5, but with your pediatrician's approval, a small amount (1/4 tsp. or less) of baking soda mixed with 8 oz. of warm water can get rid of an upset stomach.

    Mint and Lemon

    • Mint and lemon are both natural digestive aides and have a calming effect on upset stomachs. Mint soothes the digestive tract and will help the pain and duration of stomach aches. Mint also helps to clear bad bacteria from the digestive tract. Lemon mixed with warm water eases stomach pain and can alleviate constipation. Having a small amount of lemon juice in water in the morning helps the liver to produce more bile to help with healthy digestion. A tea made of a few mint leaves and a lemon slice will help with toddler stomach trouble.

    Honey and Cinnamon

    • Honey is a natural digestive aide. It comprises sugars, carbohydrates and antioxidants. Do not give honey to infants younger than 1 year old due to the risk of infant botulism. Creating a tea of a small amount of honey and warm water or eating a teaspoon of room-temperature honey will soothe the stomach. Adding cinnamon into the warm tea is helpful in stopping stomach pains. Cinnamon is a painkiller due to its natural prostaglandin-inhibiting action.

    Yogurt and Stomach Regulation

    • Yogurt that contains active cultures is useful in keeping stomach aches away. Having a serving of plain yogurt with active cultures and without added flavors or sugars will help keep your toddler's digestive system regular. It is a long-term solution to cranky stomachs.

    When to Visit the Pediatrician

    • When your toddler complains of a stomach ache, look at all symptoms to determine if a home remedy is appropriate or if a visit to the pediatrician is called for. If your toddler is experiencing dizziness, extreme nausea or acting abnormally, call your pediatrician or visit the emergency room. These can be signs of food poisoning or other medical emergencies.
