History
-
According to the company's website, Thomas Twining began serving tea in his coffee shop in 1706. Twining led the movement to popularize tea in England, where alcoholic beverages were standard at the time. Eventually, Twining branched out to his own tea store, The Golden Lyon, and the drink became popular among the working class. The company has the oldest continuously used commercial logo, which was designed in 1787. Twinings expanded operations to France in 1910, and in 1972 was recognized with the Queen's Award for Export, the first such award granted.
Today
-
In an effort to meet customers' growing concerns about growing practices and sourcing, Twinings has paired with Ethical Tea Partnership. Because tea is grown overseas, Twinings and other companies that conduct business via the Ethical Tea Partnership want to ensure that tea is grown responsibly from both environmental and social perspectives (see Resources).

The company's website includes recommendations on how to serve teas and clearly marks which teas do and do not contain caffeine. Because the company is international, availability depends on country.
Production
-
The company provides in-depth information about the production of its teas, including planting and harvesting different species of tea and many interesting facts on making tea. For instance, simple things like the time of day the leaves were picked can affect the taste of leaves grown in the same tea garden.
