Telephone Line
-
The most important connection for DSL is the telephone line that goes into a home or business. If a telephone line does not exist or cannot be connected, DSL service will be unavailable.
Telephone Jack
-
Another important connection for DSL is having a telephone jack available in a home or business. A telephone jack is required because just like a standard telephone, a cable is required to connect a DSL modem to the telephone line.

Filters
-
A filter is typically used to separate the voice signal from the DSL signal from the telephone line. When the signal is filtered, a better signal is sent to the DSL modem that can result in a better and more stable connection.
Ethernet
-
A DSL connection is sent to a computer through the use of an Ethernet cable. An Ethernet port needs to be available on a computer to establish a connection. An Ethernet port is a standard feature on new computers, but one might not be available on older machines. An adapter card can be purchased to install in the computer for an Ethernet connection.
Router
-
Many households use a wireless router to provide a DSL connection to a laptop computer. A router uses the DSL connection from the modem to broadcast a wireless signal to connect to the Internet. The main computer is also connected to the router by an Ethernet cable to provide access to the Internet.
