Reasons for Feeling Light Headed

Lightheadedness can be caused by a variety of conditions. It is a fainting or dizzy sensation primarily caused by a decrease in blood flow to the brain. High blood pressure, heart attack, pregnancy, anxiety and depression are common reasons why an individual may experience feeling lightheaded. Lightheadedness along with chest pain, jaw pain, bleeding, and blindness should be treated by a doctor immediately.

High Blood Pressure

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, can cause lightheadedness. Other symptoms of high blood pressure include confusion, chest pain, irregular heartbeat and nosebleeds. Feeling lightheaded may be an indication of a serious complication. Feeling lightheaded can be a symptom that one's blood pressure is dangerously high.

Heart Attack

Heart attacks are caused by low blood flow to the heart. The heart can die or become permanently damaged. If lightheadedness accompanies chest pain, change in vision or loss of speech, this could be a sign of a heart attack.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy a women's cardiovascular system undergoes dramatic changes. This can lead to feeling lightheaded. Anemia in pregnancy can also cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Feeling lightheaded can be a sign of a complication, and medical treatment may be needed.

Depression

A physical symptom of depression or anxiety is lightheadedness. This can be caused by chronic fatigue and appetite reduction. Some depression medications can also cause a lightheadedness. Anxiety-related feelings are brought on by an overwhelming rush of emotion.

Other Causes and Treatment

Low blood sugar in diabetes can cause lightheadedness. Feeling lightheaded is also common among patients with the flu. A person can feel lightheaded after persistent vomiting and diarrhea. Lying down may help alleviate the sensation.
