Skin Problems in Children

There are many skin conditions that can affect a child. These conditions are usually not harmful but are more cosmetic. The conditions can be worrisome to a child that is trying to fit in with other children. There are a few conditions that can cause worry, such as lice and even quarantine the child until they clear up. A doctor should be seen to properly diagnose any condition so that you can get proper treatment.

Acne

Acne is a common problem with teenagers. It's caused by overactive oil glands within the skin. The pores get clogged with dirt and oil and cause a blemish on the skin. The blemishes can appear as whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. Sometimes the pimple can become swollen underneath the surface of the skin. These are called cystic lesions and sometimes need treatment with antibiotics. The best prevention against acne is to keep your skin clean.

Eczema

Eczema is also called atopic dermatitis. This condition is most common in babies and children. Eczema is a result of very dry skin which can cause a red-raised rash, the rash can also cause red bumps that will ooze. Eczema causes a lot of itching to the sufferer. Eczema is usually outgrown before adulthood. You can treat it with lotion and creme, while detergents and fragrances should be avoided. The doctor may also prescribe topical ointments.

Impetigo

Impetigo is caused by a bacterial infection that usually begins with a cut. This condition is more prevalent in children than adults. It appears on the upper lip or nose and occurs during or after a cold. It is a crusty rash and can spread with scratching. Impetigo is treated with antibiotics.

Head Lice

Head Lice is usually found in preschools and elementary grades. Lice are little mites or bugs that resemble crabs and live off the skin. Lice is usually spread in school by sharing items, such as clothing, hair bands and hats. Lice can be hard to get rid of and sometimes require many treatments. There are special treatments available over the counter or some home remedies, such as tea tree oil, that work effectively.

Ringworm

Ringworm is another condition that is most often found in young children. Ringworm is not really a worm and is instead caused by fungus. It looks like a small ring on the skin and can result in a bald patchy circle of itchy skin. Ringworm is usually transmitted from animals and can be treated with tropical creams.
