About Duck Tape

Chances are good that you own a roll of duct or Duck tape. And, chances are equally good that you put it to use in a variety of ways. Ever wonder why it was originally invented, or how it got its name?

What Is It?

Duct tape, or Duck tape as it's often called, is a heavy duty, all-purpose tape. Made with vinyl and reinforced with fabric, its very sticky and readily adheres to many surfaces. Its standard width is 1 7/8 inches. Although silver is the most typical color, a wider variety is available.

History

The tape was originally developed during World War II, and because it was water-proof, it was used to seal ammunition cases. It was referred to as "hurricane tape" or "100 MPH tape" then as it was supposed to hold up and adhere under those conditions.
As with many products developed during WWII, it migrated to household use after the war. It was called duct tape around this time because it was used to seal heating and air conditioning ducts; however, it ultimately proved to be ineffective for this use.

Duck vs. Duct

The tape was called duck tape because of its waterproof quality and began officially being marketed under the name Duck Tape by Henkel Corporation. Henkel has been in business for over 130 years specializing in areas of home care, personal care and adhesive technology. In June 2009, Henkel sold the Duck brand (along with two other adhesive brands) to Shurtape Technologies, LLC. Shurtape had been a supplier to Henkel for over 40 years.
As with many products, brand names begin to be used as generic, and many people refer to duct tape as Duck tape regardless of the manufacturer.

Typical Uses

Because of its strength and adhesive properties, Duck tape has a wide range of applications, both traditional and nontraditional. It's used for everyday household and auto repairs--anywhere a flexible and weather-proof bond is needed. One of its benefits is that it does not leave a sticky residue after removal. Some believe you can fix everything with Duck tape; however, the company's website carries a legal disclaimer regarding "alternate uses."

Not-So-Typical Uses

The tape was instrumental in the safe return of Apollo 13. When the space ship's square carbon dioxide filters had to be altered to fit the round components in the lunar module, ground crew determined this tape would work and relayed the instructions to the astronauts. A roll goes on every NASA mission.

Cult Following

Duck tape has generated a cult following, and there are now annual contests for the best prom dress made from Duck tape. Other contests include Saves the Day and Stick or Treat, which recognizes the best Halloween costume made from Duck tape. Duck offers an online fan club and has a page on Facebook.
Additionally, the Duct Tape Guys have centered their comic routines on the product and enjoy an ever-growing audience. They offer countless humorous and practical uses for duct tape.
