Scabies causes serious itching of the skin, and may even cause infections in the resulting open sores. It is a very uncomfortable condition, with a healing process that takes several days. Diligence with treatment and prevention of further infestations are the two ways to get rid of scabies for good.

The Facts

Scabies is a skin condition caused by microscopic mites called sarcoptes scabiei. They burrow into your skin, and this causes severe itching. The mites can even lay eggs in the skin, which can extend the healing process. A single mite lives only up to 36 hours on average, according to MedicineNet.com.

Transmission

Scabies can be spread only by close and intimate contact. Family members are susceptible, because of constant close contact. The most common way it is transmitted is through sex. Scabies cannot be spread by sitting next to an infected person in a public place or simply by shaking hands.

Medications

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the only method of treatments available for scabies are prescription medication known as scabicides. They include Acticin, Elimite, and Eurax, which all come in the form of ointments. Liberally apply the ointment over your entire body every eight hours. When treating scabies in babies and children, be sure to apply the ointment to their faces and scalps as well, as scabies tend to infest these areas of the body. If any sore on your skin becomes infected, your doctor will likely prescribe an antibiotic as well.

Infestation Prevention

Scabies spreads easily between people who are in close contact with each other, so it is vital that any other infestations be prevented. If you have come into close contact with someone who has developed scabies, you should see a doctor for preventative treatment, even if you do not show any signs of scabies. Family members of those with scabies should also seek treatment. If you develop a scabies infestation, then you and your family’s clothing, linens, and towels should be bagged up for 72 hours or washed in hot water and electrically dried to kill any remaining mites and their eggs.

Warning

Do not attempt to treat scabies on your own by using fumigants or insecticide sprays. The only way to treat scabies is by getting a prescription ointment from your doctor. No over-the-counter methods exist. Once you have gone through treatment, your skin may itch for several days. f the itching persists for more than two weeks, see your doctor, as you may need more treatment.
