Bulldog Puppy Information

The bulldog, also known as the English bulldog, descends from a line of fighting dogs, evident in its large head and stocky body. However, since the mid-1800s, bulldog breeders have worked diligently to reduce the aggression within the breed and the result is today's gentle bulldog with an even temperament. Raising a bulldog puppy is rewarding but dog owners must be aware of the traits and medical problems inherent in the breed.

Training

Training your bulldog puppy early is imperative since adult bulldogs can be quite strong. Young bulldog puppies are active and may be mischievous but they learn quickly and once trained, they rarely misbehave. Sign up for a local dog obedience class or a puppy kindergarten to teach your young bulldog the basic commands of "Stay, Down, Sit, Heel and Come."

Diet

Your bulldog puppy can eat any quality commercial puppy food but take care not to overfeed him since adult bulldogs have a propensity for being overweight, which may shorten their lifespan and contribute to other medical conditions.

Exercise

Your bulldog puppy needs only moderate exercise to keep him happy and healthy and to burn off excess energy. A short walk twice a day or a couple of play sessions will be enough to keep him from romping about the house. However, very young bulldog puppies may enjoy more frequent but shorter exercise periods. Your bulldog will spend a fair amount of time resting comfortably.

Health

Bulldogs have some unique health issues and recognizing early signs of a problem will assist you and your veterinarian in formulating lifestyle changes to keep your dog healthy. Your puppy may develop breathing problems, worsened by allergies to airborne substances. In addition, humidity may make breathing more difficult.

Behavior

Although your bulldog puppy will return affection easily, he may also grumble, snore and pass gas frequently. He will enjoy a soft comfortable bed or a ramp that allows him to sleep on the sofa. Your puppy will enjoy snuggling with you.

Care

Brushing your bulldog puppy twice a week with a soft bristle dog brush will remove excess hair and keep his coat healthy. Keep a clean washrag handy to wipe the wrinkles on your puppy's face daily to prevent redness and irritation. Deep wrinkles may require wiping after every meal.
