What Are the Parts of a Doorknob?
On an average day, we touch multiple door handles multiple times. A door handle is a very small item for the amount of importance we place on it. Exterior door handles lock out the rest of the world and are designed to secure our homes when we are gone. Most of us lock them up and don't think twice about it. Interior door handles allow us privacy. Knowing a little more about door handles will help you appreciate them a bit more. Does this Spark an idea?

The Door
-
The door is an integral part of any door handle system. As far as main entry security goes, the door's role is to keep out undesirables (i.e., people, animals, the elements). For interior doors, the door handle acts as a latch to keep the door closed for privacy. The door must be prepared correctly in order to accept any door handle.
The Hardware
-
The door handle hardware includes the screws and other parts and pieces that vary from one door handle manufacturer to another that allows the door handle to be assembled securely and fit the door correctly. This might include plastic bushings and optional strike and strike plate hardware.

The Bolt Mechanism
-
The bolt mechanism is inserted into the side of the door into a 1-inch hole. This piece of the door handle holds the door closed. Both sides of the handle set pass through the bolt mechanism. The spindle, which is part of the locking side of the handle set, actuates the bolt mechanism pulling the bolt into the door.
The Handle Set
-
The handle set includes the interior and exterior door knobs handles and any other parts and pieces that help the handle set to be installed correctly. The exterior side of the handle set creates the level of security provided by the handle set. Exterior doors require a key to unlock the mechanism inside the handle set. The exterior side of a locking interior door has a hole in it to allow a shaft to be inserted to unlock the door from the outside. Non-locking doors, like closet doors, do not require a locking handle set, so the exterior side of the handle set looks like the interior side.
The Strike Plate
-
The strike plate attaches to the door frame to reinforce the latch hole in the door frame and to prevent the wood around the latch hole from wearing out prematurely. The finish matches that of the handle set. The strike plate is installed in the door frame after the outside shape of the strike plate is cut out. It is then installed with two screws.
