What Is a PPS File Extension?
PowerPoint presentations can be ported for viewing as PowerPoint slide shows. These files are useful in sharing across computer platforms, and utilities are available for users to view the files without purchasing the Microsoft Office suite or the PowerPoint application. PowerPoint shows can be identified with the file extension "PPS," which can also be accessed by other presentation software. PPS files contain the presentation show slides and are not easily revised without the PowerPoint application.

PPS File Extension
-
Presentations are often prepared in Microsoft Powerpoint and are designated with the file extension ".PPT" or ".PPTX." These presentation files may not be easy to view by some users if their version of PowerPoint or operating system is different. For example, many users have difficulty opening a .PPTX file, the file format developed for the latest version of PowerPoint, 2007 for PC and 2008 for Mac. PowerPoint 97 and 2000 (PC) and PowerPoint X (Mac) may be able to open certain .PPT files but not all. For more universal access, presentations can be saved as PowerPoint slide shows. "PPS" or ".pps" is the file extension for a PowerPoint slide show that can be opened using any version of PowerPoint, or a PowerPoint viewer utility.
Utility
-
A PPS file allows a slide presentation to be posted or sent for viewing. PPS files can be viewed on most platforms, such as Windows (XP or Vista) and Mac. The slides are ported to a file, but a PPS file cannot be revised unless it is converted by saving it as a .PPT (PowerPoint presentation) file. Animations, transitions and embedded graphics are retained in a PPS file for viewing.
-
Compatibility
-
PPS files can be accessed by most platforms---Windows XP and Vista, Mac OS 9 and OS X and Linux. Presentation software other than PowerPoint can be used to view the slide show. In addition, utilities are available that allow users to view PowerPoint slide shows without full presentation software.
PowerPoint Viewer
-
Microsoft provides a free viewer for PowerPoint slide shows. The viewer can be used on either Windows XP or Vista platforms (see Resources for a link to the viewer). The MS PowerPoint Viewer can also run on the Linux platform, using a bridge utility such as Wine HQ to install it. The PowerPoint Viewer is a standalone application that opens PPS and PPT presentations to display on monitors, but it doesn't have any functions for editing the files. The PowerPoint Viewer is helpful in reviewing presentations that were created in later versions of PowerPoint (while you're waiting for the sender to resend the .PPTX file in a different or earlier format).
Other Ways to View PPS Files
-
PPS files can be opened by most presentation applications such as Impress (Open Office or Star Office), Corel (WordPerfect) or Keynote (Mac iWork). These applications can open the file for viewing or convert the file for revisions by saving it in PowerPoint (PPT) format. Depending on your computer and operating system, fonts may be substituted during the conversion process.
