What Is the Definition of Energy Conservation?

There are two types of energy sources: renewable and nonrenewable. Renewable sources like wind, solar and water energy are constantly renewed. Nonrenewable energy sources like oil, gas and coal cannot be replaced and are in limited supply. Knowing the definition of energy conservation is important because it will help save the nonrenewable energy resources so that they are available for future generations.

The definition of energy conservation refers to actively reducing the amount of energy used, or making sure it is used as efficiently as possible. Energy means the ability to do something like warming something, moving something and lighting something. Energy conservation is meant to reduce the amount of energy being used. This can make a big difference for many of the energy-powered appliances we rely on to run machines, operate televisions and cook.

  1. Educate yourself

    • Learn more about the definition of energy conservation, and start putting your knowledge to use. Spread what you learn to family, friends and the community.

    Change what you do

    • Because the definition of energy conservation encourages reducing or saving nonrenewable energy, making simple changes like walking, riding a bike and using public transportation instead of driving your own vehicle can result in very big changes. These simple changes can greatly reduce the amount of pollution in the air.

Make small changes around the house

    • Small changes make a big difference. Turn down the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees, make sure to turn off lights in rooms not being used and close curtains and windows during the day in the summer and at the end of the day during winter. Also, change the filter to the air-conditioning and heating system so that they use energy more efficiently.

    Recycle regularly

    • Items like newspaper, aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles require less energy when made from recycled materials than when produced from brand-new materials.

    Invest in energy efficient appliances

    • Although it may seem as if spending extra money on energy-efficient light bulbs, ovens, water heaters, washers and dryers is too costly, the savings in the long run makes it worthwhile. If you will soon be replacing an appliance in your home, consider spending a little more on an energy-efficient model. By doing so you are contributing to a healthier, cleaner planet.
