Malaysia Airlines started as Malayan Airways in 1947 when the country was under British control. The airline changed its name to Malaysian Airlines in 1963 after the country gained independence. The company's title evolved from Malaysia-Singapore Airline in 1966 to Malaysian Airline System in 1972 after a failed cooperative effort with Singapore Airlines. The name Malaysia Airlines was applied to the air carrier in 1987 as the company began offering dozens of global routes.

According a report by The Sydney Morning Herald on Feb. 24, 2009, Malaysia Airlines also requires all flight attendants to fall within the "normal" range for their weight and height according to the body mass index (BMI). Trainers for Malaysia Airlines staff also focus on grooming, dealing with difficult passengers and other skills needed to maintain the airline's sterling reputation.
