What Fruits Do Zebra Finch Birds Eat?

Though native to Australia, zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) have become naturalized across much of Indonesia. They live in savannas and dry subtropical areas, with little vegetation other than scatter trees or shrubs. They generally measure around 4 inches long. Males have distinctive black and white markings -- hence the name zebra finch -- while females have subdued gray plumage. They're also commonly kept as pets all across the globe.

Fruits for Finches

Zebra finches are primarily seed-eaters, but they will eat some fruits in the wild. The kind they snack on depends on what's in season and the specific area in which they live. If you keep a pet zebra finch, it's a good idea to feed him a range of different fruits to ensure he has a balanced diet. He'll eat almost any type of fruit, including peeled apple, banana, blueberries and oranges. Avoid avocados, lemons, grapefruits, plums, rhubarb and any fruit seeds or dried fruits that have been treated using sulphur dioxide, as these can prove toxic.
