Symptoms of Hip Problems in Dogs

As dogs age they can become more susceptible to hip problems that can limit their mobility and slow them down. Some hip problems such as hip dysplasia can be genetic. In the case of genetic disorders, even younger dogs can suffer the discomfort of hip problems. Hip problems can also result from injuries. It is important to recognize the symptoms of a hip problem in order to seek prompt medical attention for your dog.

Lameness

The symptom most often noticed is lameness. A dog with a hip problem may limp or walk with a swaying gait. He may show an intolerance for exercise. His gait may seem abnormal or slightly off balance, especially in the movement of the hind quarters.

Limited Mobility

A dog with hip problems will often avoid unnecessary movement such as climbing stairs. He may not be able to jump onto a higher surface such as a bed or chair. He may avoid activities that he once enjoyed such as running and playing.

Pain

Hip problems such as dysplasia and arthritis can cause varying degrees of pain. This can be apparent in the dog's behavior and actions. He may also whine or whimper especially during difficult movements. The degree of pain also depends upon the severity of the condition. Pain and mobility can also be affected by other factors such as weight. A dog that is overweight may struggle more with movement and may experience increased pain due to the extra weight adding stress to the hip joints.

Clicking or Creaking Sound

In some instances you may actually be able to hear a clicking or creaking sound when the dog walks or rises from a sitting or lying position. This is usually more common in advanced cases of chronic hip conditions.

No Symptoms

In some dogs, there are no apparent symptoms although a hip condition exists. Younger dogs may not display symptoms of a hip condition as prominently. Symptoms vary depending age, condition, severity and progression of the hip problem.

Prevention/Treatment

Proper diet and moderate exercise can help to lessen the effects of hip conditions such as hip dysplasia and arthritis but ultimately the conditions are progressive. Treatment may vary depending on the condition itself and the state of progression. The dog may be treated with anti-inflammatory medications and in some cases, surgery may be an option. It is important to keep a dog with joint problems such as arthritis warm and comfortable. It is also important to lessen stress on the joints by eliminating the necessity to climb stairs. Consider providing the dog with a ramp for easy access if necessary.
