- The symptom most often noticed is lameness. A dog with a hip problem may limp or walk with a swaying gait. He may show an intolerance for exercise. His gait may seem abnormal or slightly off balance, especially in the movement of the hind quarters.
- A dog with hip problems will often avoid unnecessary movement such as climbing stairs. He may not be able to jump onto a higher surface such as a bed or chair. He may avoid activities that he once enjoyed such as running and playing.

- In some instances you may actually be able to hear a clicking or creaking sound when the dog walks or rises from a sitting or lying position. This is usually more common in advanced cases of chronic hip conditions.
- In some dogs, there are no apparent symptoms although a hip condition exists. Younger dogs may not display symptoms of a hip condition as prominently. Symptoms vary depending age, condition, severity and progression of the hip problem.
- Proper diet and moderate exercise can help to lessen the effects of hip conditions such as hip dysplasia and arthritis but ultimately the conditions are progressive. Treatment may vary depending on the condition itself and the state of progression. The dog may be treated with anti-inflammatory medications and in some cases, surgery may be an option. It is important to keep a dog with joint problems such as arthritis warm and comfortable. It is also important to lessen stress on the joints by eliminating the necessity to climb stairs. Consider providing the dog with a ramp for easy access if necessary.
