Showering at least once a day can help rid your chest of dirt and bacteria buildup that causes acne, especially since it cannot be easily wiped off due to clothing. Some prefer to shower more than once daily, especially after working out or being in a warm, humid environment. Wash the affected area well with a strong acne cleanser made specifically for the body rather than the face.
For some people, washing the area more than once each day can cause skin irritation and dryness, which can promote the acne. If this occurs, reduce the cleansing to once a day. -
There are creams and ointments available both over the counter and by prescription that will help treat chest acne. These solutions should be applied directly to the blemishes 10-15 minutes after washing the area. This will help reduce irritation from the medication.
Over-the-counter topicals include benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Prescription medicines, such as clindamycin and erythromycin, are used to treat the inflammation and irritation and kill the bacteria. Other prescription topicals, including Retin-A and Differin, work by unplugging the pores and preventing them from becoming blocked in the future. -
Oral medicines used to treat chest acne are only available by prescription. These pills work by cleansing the bloodstream and underneath the skin, which is where much acne causing bacteria can lie.
- Making the switch to oil free soaps and lotions can help treat and prevent chest acne. Oily, greasy items can clog the pores, which is how white and blackheads form. Avoid using anything other than soap and an acne cleanser on the affected area, as your chest doesn't need cosmetics or anything else applied to it.
-
Cigarette smoke can damage skin tissue, making it weaker in the fight against dirt and bacteria. This can cause pores to become clogged easier, resulting in acne.
- Wearing loose-fitting, cotton garments is helpful to get rid of chest acne. This allows better airflow through the clothing, eliminating some of the sweat that can plug the pores and cause pimples to form.

on 11/30/2009 Once I eliminated refined white sugar from my diet as a teen, my acne calmed down to a great degree. I also stopped drinking milk and eating ice cream. I'm one of those who believe diet plays a part as well. Thanks for the well written article. 5*
