The Effect of High Blood Sugar

High blood sugar is often referred to as diabetes. The levels considered as high depend on whether the blood test used was fasting or after the person ate. Check with your doctor on what level they consider normal. High blood sugar is also referred to as hyperglycemia, meaning hyper or above average sugar or glucose. Many symptoms of high blood sugar are silent, but others are signals you might have high blood sugar. If you are having high blood sugar, you might experience some of the following symptoms.

  1. Excessive Thirst

    • One of the symptoms of high blood sugar is excessive thirst. If everything has remained the same, meaning you are not exercising more than usual or eating more salty food which would cause excessive thirst, and you are still drinking a lot more than usual, this should be paid attention to. It could be a sign of high blood sugar.

    Peeing a Lot

    • Peeing a lot goes along with the previous symptom. However, sometimes liquid intake has not increased, and people still find themselves peeing a lot. These symptoms can also include being unable to empty your bladder completely. This could be a sign of nerve damage, resulting from long standing diabetes or diabetic neuropathy.

    Sores Slow to Heal

    • Having a sore or open wound that is slow to heal could be a sign of high blood sugar. This is due in part to the nerves being affected, but also due to blood circulation that is slower than usual. If you notice a sore that is not healing as quickly as they use to, this could be a sign of high blood sugar.

    Unusual fatigue

    • The body needs sugar in the right amounts to use for energy. If your blood sugar is too high, the opposite of what you think would happen occurs. Your body is trying to dispose of the extra sugar, which leaves you tireder than usual. If you find yourself having unusual tiredness or fatigue, this could be a sign of high blood sugar.

    Unexplained Weight Loss

    • People loss weight for a number of reasons, so weight loss alone is no an indication of high blood sugar. However, unexplained weight loss in addition to one or more of the aforementioned symptoms could be a sign of high blood sugar. If you are not trying to lose weight, are eating as much as usual and are still losing weight and experiencing other high blood sugar symptoms, you should contact your doctor.
