About Choke Tubes
Choke tubes are customizing devices used to change how the pellets of a shotgun spread when they are fired. If hunters want to aim farther or achieve a higher concentration of pellets for greater accuracy, they will insert a choke tube at the end of the shotgun barrel. There are many different types of choke tubes, from those that alter the shot only slightly to those that heavily concentrate the shot for much improve accuracy.

Definition
-
A choke tube is a small device, shaped like a tube and made out strong metal, placed inside the barrel of a shotgun. The metal is often steel and can be treated to be rust and wear resistant, with precise diameter and length measurements. Hunters insert the choke tube at the end of the shotgun, usually with a screw mechanism. While some choke tubes are permanent, most can be replaced by different choke tubes as desired.
Uses
-
A choke tube is used to control the spread of the shot, the pellets the shotgun fires. These pellets, the small BBs shotgun shells contain, normally fire in a wide spread pattern. Up close, the spread of the shot is small and relatively accurately. The farther away the shot falls, the more it will spread out and the less accurate it will be.
Choke tubes seek to make the pellet spread more effectively, often concentrating the shot so it can travel farther. Most shotguns come with a choice of choke tubes to achieve different effects, but more can be purchased; the effect they have on the shot depends on how they are constructed. Shot spread is usually referred to in percentages, such as 60 percent accuracy at 50 feet, while choke tubes improve these specs (i.e. up to 90 percent accuracy at 50 feet). -
Improved Cylinder Version
-
This is an inexpensive and general version of the choke tube, made to slightly focus the shot spread. This gives hunters slightly more accuracy, but also lets the shot hit a wide area. This choke tube is used in areas where there is lots of cover for small game to hide in, and the hunter wants to be more sure of a killing shot.
Modified Version
-
The modified choke tube is one of the most common types of tubes, used to concentrate the shot more than an improved cylinder version and shoot over farther distances. This is a choke tube used most often by those experienced with shotgun, who trust their aim and are more interested in effectively hiding from their game.
Full Version
-
Full choke tubes concentrate the shot as much as they are able, giving the shotgun much improved accuracy and greater range. This type is reserved either for experienced hunters hunting specific targets, such as one bird in a waterfowl flock, or for hunters shooting at large targets, such as wild turkeys.
Specific Modifications
-
The three categories of choke tubes are only the beginning to the specifications available. Some tubes are longer than the barrel, sticking out beyond it and offering even greater accuracy. Others concentrate specific types of shot, such as steel of those made out of special materials. Still other choke tubes are made from especially durable materials to last longer.
