  1. History

    • During the age of steel in the 1960s, John Ulman began working with a small metallurgical company that studied the behavior of metallic elements and compounds, or the technology of metals. Originally called Composite Metal Products, Inc., Mr. Ulman worked with metal crafters to fine tune his products.

    Significance

    • Mr. Ulman was awarded over 50 patents in the area of bonding metals. He also assisted with the United States Mint change from silver coins to the bonded layered metals we see today. Metallic bonding is the process of bonding together metals through melting and positive and negative bonds, which holds the metals together. Through these experiments, Ulman formed an alliance with Alcoa, the worlds leading manufacturer of aluminum in all areas of industry, to create Clad Metals, Inc.

    Progression

    • In 1971, Ulman had perfected his metal bonding process and had started to create cookware showcasing his craft. All-Clad Metalcrafters was established and professional grade products were available to the chef as well as home cook. It wasn't long before the All-Clad brand became the favorite cookware of many gourmets.

    Location and Production

    • All-Clad is manufactured in southwestern Pennsylvania and produces American-made metals and employs American craftsmen to create their products. All-Clad is the only bonded cookware manufacturer to use only American metals and craftsmen. All cookware is hand-inspected to ensure quality, and products are created under extremely high craft standards.

    Features

    • Popular items from All-Clad include their copper core cookware line. Copper is a great heat conductor and works well as a cookware. The pots and pans are lined with stainless steel making them easy to use and clean. They also create a line using copper on the exterior of the pans called Cop-R-Chef showcasing the amazing, even heating of copper. All-Clad has a line of oven ware with triple-ply bonding which creates even heating and baking for items from roasts to cakes.

    Popular Culture

    • Chef Emeril Lagasse recently released his line of cookware, Emerilware, which is made by All-Clad. His line offers different materials for his pans ranging from cast iron to stainless steel. Emerilware's most popular cookwares are the 10-piece copper and also stainless steel sets.
