Over 700 islands and 2,000 coral cays sit sprinkled into the sparkling blue waters of the Caribbean. And they all make up one country -- the Bahamas. Pastel colored houses, a relaxed island attitude and abundant underwater life wait just a short cruise from the U.S. mainland. Just make sure to pack the right travel documents to get there.
Two Sets of Requirements
You must satisfy the requirements of two different border crossing authorities during your cruise -- the Bahamas Department of Immigration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Bahamas enforce looser requirements. Any government issued photo I.D. and proof of citizenship, such as an original birth certificate, will suffice. But U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires a valid passport card or book to return to the United States. To satisfy the stricter rules of the Department of Homeland Security, your need a passport card or book to board your ship.
