The Signs of Perimenopause

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Women's Health Information Center defines menopause as the condition that leads up to menopause. When women are in perimenopause, their ovaries no longer work efficiently because they produce less estrogen and progesterone. They also experience a decline in their abilities to conceive. Many women feel the signs of perimenopause between 45- and 55-years-old although some women experiences changes in their bodies' in their 30s.

  1. Menstrual Cycle

    • One of the first signs of perimenopause is a change in a woman's menstrual cycle. The pattern varies from woman to woman. Some women have shorter periods; others have longer periods. Many women have heavier or lighter bleeding, and their periods may come more often or less often.

    Hot Flashes and Night Sweats

    • The National Women's Health Information Center states that two of the signs of perimenopause are hot flashes and night sweats. Hot flashes occur when a woman feels a sudden rush of body heat, even when a room is cold. Night sweats can be classified as hot flashes that happen at night, followed by chills. Night sweats lead to restless nights and exhaustion.

    Vaginal Dryness

    • Vaginal dryness is another sign of perimenopause that can decrease a woman's quality of life. Not only is vaginal dryness uncomfortable; it can have detrimental affect on intimate relationships. Vaginal dryness leads to painful sexual experiences and even affects a woman's ability to become aroused. Emotionally, this strains her relationship with her partner.

    Concentration and Emotions

    • The National Women's Heath Information Center says that many of the signs of perimenopause affect cognition. Women may find it hard to concentrate or focus on tasks. Perimenopause can lead to feelings of confusion or forgetfulness. Women also become crankier and experience mood swings. These cognitive and emotional signs likely relate to the lack of sleep caused by perimenopause.

    Hair Growth

    • A sign of perimenopause includes a disproportion in hair growth. While hair thins or falls out of the head, women may experience large amounts of hair growth on the face, chest and chin.

    Recommendations

    • The National Women's Health Information Center states that women who think that they may be experiencing the signs of perimenopause should keep a diary to document any changes in their menstrual cycle and other symbols. Doctors may prescribe oral contraceptives or other hormone treatments to balance the body. Women should also maintain a healthy diet and exercise to reduce perimenopause signs.
