What Are the Treatments for Systemic Yeast Infection?

A systemic yeast infection refers to abnormally high levels of the yeast candida albicans. Candida releases mycotoxins, which can negatively affect the body in a variety of ways, from acne to arthritis. Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, depression, mood swings, poor concentration and frequent sugar cravings. Candida is normally kept in check automatically by the body via the body's healthy bacteria, however, sometimes candida can overwhelm the system, or there is insufficient healthy bacteria to counteract it. Antibiotics are one reason for this as they can destroy healthy bacteria.

  1. Sugar

    • Refined sugar lends itself to the growth of candida. Restricting sugar from your diet as much as possible will help rid your body of candida and improve your symptoms. Refined sugar sources include both white and brown sugar, as well as date sugar, corn, rice, maple syrup, honey, molasses and sorghum. Check food package labels for ingredients such as sucrose, maltose and fructose, as these indicate sugar.

    Other Diet Eliminations

    • Alcoholic drinks may contribute to systemic candida infections. If you're experiencing severe candida symptoms, it's best to eliminate alcohol altogether from your diet. It's also important to severely restrict yeast products from your diet such as baker's yeast, brewer's yeast, and any bakery goods that contain yeast such as bagels, rolls, bread, muffins and other pastries.

    Acidophilus

    • An essential way to treat unhealthy bacteria is by balancing it out by introducing healthy bacteria into the digestive system. Acidophilus supplements provide that balance for your body. Take acidophilus supplements every day. You can also purchase acidophilus-enriched foods such as acidophilus milk or yogurt -- just be sure the label says "live cultures" and select a product that is low in sugar or sugar-free.

    Cinnamon

    • Cinnamon has antimicrobial properties that can help kill candida. Cinnamon is available in supplement form and as an essential oil, as well as in powdered bark that is commonly used in baking. Try taking about 2 to 4 grams daily.

    Coconut Oil

    • Take coconut oil supplements. The lauric acid in coconut oil may help to kill yeast cells. Follow the directions on the label for dosages. Or you could try adding coconut oil to recipes; just be sure to purchase cold-pressed oil to reduce cholesterol intake.
