What Makes Dog Coats Shiny?

A dog's shiny coat is a sign of good health and proper diet, but it doesn't get that way by accident. A dog's shiny healthy coat comes from the inside out, and it takes dedication and time from his owner to keep it that way. If your dog's coat isn't as shiny as you'd like, taking a few steps can improve his looks and health.

    Food

  1. In this case, beauty is more than skin deep, and it starts with a good quality dog food. There are many brands that claim their food promotes a healthy coat but read the label. Look for high-protein foods. Meat should be the first ingredient on the list. Also, any type of omega-3 fatty acids will help your dog get a shiny coat.
  2. Vitamins

  3. Vitamins and minerals are essential for a healthy coat. You can supplement your dog's diet with vitamins and minerals in pill or powder form. However, too much of a good thing can be bad, so check with your vet for proper dosage and make sure the total dose from food and supplements doesn't exceed the recommended amount.
  4. Supplements

  5. In addition to vitamins, other supplements can help make your dog's coat shiny. There are a number of commercial supplements that include a variety of oils like flax seed oil, salmon oil and cod liver oil. Mixtures like Linotone and similar oil supplements are highly recommended.
  6. Grooming

  7. Make sure you groom your dog regularly and properly for a shiny coat. Use a shampoo and other products especially made for dogs. Rinse the shampoo out completely; residue can dull the coat. Comb or cut out mats and brush her coat well to get out the loose hairs. If you're short on time or patience, treat your dog to a professional grooming.
  8. Vet Care

  9. Dogs who are in poor health have dull coats. Keep up with regular checkups and if you notice a change in your dog's coat, have him checked out for parasites. Fleas and ticks can also dull your pet's coat so ask your vet for the best preventative measures.
