What Is a Bottle Tree?

Bottle trees dates back to the 9th century in Congo, Africa. They originated out of superstition, but are now used more for yard or garden decor.

  1. History

    • In the Congo, it was said that colored glass attracted evil spirits and trapped them inside bottles. When the wind blew, the moaning sound made by the wind whistling in the bottles was said to be these trapped spirits.

    Construction

    • A bottle tree is an artistic lawn or garden decoration made from round, rolled rods of metal (rebar) and empty glass bottles that can vary in size and color. The rolled, round bar is welded into the shape of a tree trunk and branches. Glass bottles are placed on the ends of each "branch" to act as the "leaves" of the tree.
