- Ginger is an age-old remedy for the nausea and vomiting associated with morning sickness. Pregnant women can benefit from this herb by drinking noncaffeinated ginger ale or by drinking ginger tea. To brew ginger tea, thinly slice an inch of ginger root, boil it in one cup of water for 15 to 20 minutes, then strain and sip the beverage. Alternatively, brew your ginger tea by stirring one tsp. each of fresh ginger juice and honey in one cup of hot water. Sip a cup of ginger tea up to three times a day.
- Fennel seed is an ancient Chinese folk remedy for morning sickness. To use it, grind two tsp. of fennel seeds in a coffee grinder and lightly grind. Put the ground seeds into a cup with one cup of boiling water. Cover and let steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink as needed throughout the day.
- Raspberry leaves are an old British folk remedy for morning sickness. For relief, pregnant women chew on a few raspberry leaves. These leaves can also be brewed into an herbal tea that can be drunk as needed throughout the day.
- Peppermint, or spearmint, contains a number of active compounds that help alleviate the symptoms of morning sickness by minimizing the stomach's gag reflex. You can benefit from peppermint by brewing and sipping a cup of herbal tea up to three times a day. Place one heaping tsp. of dried peppermint (or two tsp. of fresh peppermint) into a cup, pour in a cup of boiling water, cover and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink the peppermint tea as needed throughout the day. Chamomile tea also has a settling effect on the stomach, and can be brewed using the same steps outlined for peppermint tea.
- Use lemon to do battle with nauseous odors. Hold a lemon peel to your nose to neutralize the queasy effect caused by odors. You can also put a few drops of lemon oil on a clean cloth and breathe through the cloth to prevent nausea from strong odors such as spicy or greasy food.
