Zymox Otic is an all-natural topical ear solution meant to eliminate infection-causing bacteria, fungi, and viruses that lead to ear inflammation, otherwise known as otitis externa. One of its benefits is the absence of any antibiotics, meaning it is less likely that bacteria will acquire an immunity to the medicine.
Zymox consists of three enzymes that work to fight infections. These include Lysozyme, Lactoferrin and Lactoperoxidase. Lactoperoxidase is sometimes used in the preservation of raw milk. Additionally, a 1.0% Hydrocortisone is also present in the solution, although it is possible to purchase Zymox without it.
The medicine is meant to be used once a day by squeezing the topical cream into the ear canal until the canal is full. After rubbing the medication in, it is best to allow the dog to shake his head to allow excess medication to be removed. For acute infections, use for seven days; for more chronic infections, it is best to use for fourteen days. It is important not to use any other topical solutions alongside Zymox for the reason that other medicine could make the enzymes less effective.
Yeast infections are one of the main afflictions that Zymox works to eliminate. Yeast infections of the ear are caused by excessive moisture in and around the ear canal usually caused by swimming, baths, humid weather, or big floppy ears that don't allow air to dry out the ear canal. Zymox is also effective against bacterias such as Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Proteus and Malassezia.
Associated Zymox Products
In addition to the Zymox Otic topical cream, Zymox produces several other related products. There is a ear cleanser, a medicated shampoo, a medicated rinse, a Zymox hydrocortisone spray, topical wipes and even a skin product for reptiles, called Zylafen Medicated Skin Therapy.
A 1.25oz bottle of Zymox Otix with hydrocortisone can be purchased from their website for $12.95, while a larger, clinical size (8 oz.) cost $58. Amazon.com has package deals that include three different Zymox products for a lower cost separately purchased items.
