What Does an Assistant Manager Do?

We've all heard the term "assistant manager," but many of us don't know what being an assistant manager really entails. This position is part management, part co-worker, and requires a person to be able to take on and fulfill the duties of an assistant manager.

  1. Managing

    • Assistant managers are usually "managers in training." They are both apprentice and trainer, learning the duties of management while training those they supervise. They usually have experience in the positions they oversee and are able to advise employees on how to most effectively get their jobs done.

    Assisting the Manager

    • Assistant managers assist the manager in his day-to-day duties, supervise employees and report the activities of the day to the manager. The assistant manager might be asked to complete daily reports, schedule employees and intervene in employee disputes.

    Experience

    • Usually, an assistant manager has experience in his industry and environment, and has shown mastery of that position before being promoted to assistant manager. This experience gives the assistant manager the ability to handle situations that might arise with less experienced workers, possibly being able to resolve issues without having to involve the manager.

    Pay Rate

    • Assistant managers are usually paid at a rate somewhere between the regular, hourly workers in their industry and the manager.

    Stand-In

    • There are occasions when the assistant manager will need to stand-in for the manager. Sometimes this occurs while upper management is looking for a new manager.
