Limo Driver Requirements

Limousine drivers, often referred to as chauffeurs, must be licensed to transport passengers and collect fares. The laws governing a chauffeur's license are the same regardless of whether you work full time or just a few hours each week.

Background Check and Driving Test

To get a limo driver's license you must pass a background check and have a clean driving record. You also must pass a driving test, which includes avoiding sudden stops, turning, maneuvering around road hazards and driving in heavy traffic, and you must pass a written test on driving laws, local geography and English. Once you pass these tests, you may have a chauffeur's license designation added to your regular driver's license.

Transporting People with Physical Disabilities

If you will operate a handicap-accessible vehicle, you must also get a para-transit driver's license. In addition to the standard chauffeur's requirements, you must be able to operate a handicap hydraulic lift and related equipment designed to help people with disabilities.

Educational Requirements

Depending on where you will be working, you likely will have to attend classes to get your license. A typical course for limo and taxi drivers lasts 80 hours. You will need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with basic math skills. Most employers also expect a limo driver to be able to perform routine maintenance on the vehicles, such as changing a flat tire and changing the engine oil. You will learn how to operate a taxi meter in the classroom or on the job by training with a mentor.

Requirements for Novice Limo Drivers

As a new limo driver, you may be required to spend a certain number of probationary hours driving with an employer before you can operate a limousine alone. This requirement varies from city to city and is most commonly required just for novice chauffeurs.

Commercial Endorsement and Transporting Large Groups

In some states, the basic chauffer's license, also known as a passenger endorsement or "hack," is all you need to transport up to 15 passengers. Other states require a commercial transportation license, even if you have fewer than 16 passengers in a vehicle. If you will carry 16 or more passengers, the federal government requires you to get a commercial license endorsement and additional training.
