Home Remedy for Cat Dandruff

Those little white specks of dandruff all over your cat's coat don't just detract from her beauty--they're also a sign that something is wrong. Causes of dandruff in cats range from such easy-to-solve problems as dry skin and inadequate diet to serious illnesses like diabetes, allergies, thyroid disease, liver imbalances and heart disease. If your cat develops dandruff, she should see her veterinarian for a checkup. Assuming she has no health problems, here are some home remedies for cat dandruff.

  1. Comb Often

    • Combing or brushing your cat will increase the circulation in his skin and distribute natural oils across his scalp and fur. Use a flea or greyhound comb to remove dry skin and dirt from both the top and undercoat. If your cat is not used to being groomed, start slowly. When he gets tired of your grooming session, put the comb away and try again the next day.

Add Wild Salmon or Fish Oil

    • The Omega 3 fatty acids in wild salmon or fish oil will moisturize your cat's skin and can also help with heart disease, inflammation, allergies and other conditions. Most health food stores sell wild salmon and fish oil. Add either to your cat's wet food.

    Eliminate Dry Food

    • Cats' bodies are designed to get the moisture they need from their food. If your cat's dandruff is caused by dry skin, eliminating dry food from her diet could solve the problem.

    Bathe Less Often

    • Although cats sometimes need a water bath, bathing too often can strip the natural oils from your cat's skin. If you must bathe your cat, give her skin a chance to recover its natural balance before bathing again.

    Adjust the Humidity

    • If your skin feels dry, chances are your cat has dry skin, too. Putting a humidifier in the room he uses most often will help moisturize his skin and eliminate dandruff.

    Help Her Lose Weight

    • Cats who are very overweight have trouble grooming themselves, and this lack of grooming can cause dandruff. Putting your cat on an all-wet food diet will help her lose weight.
