Baseball Poker Rules

There are several varieties of poker, such as Texas Hold 'Em, Omaha and Stud, but few are based on popular sports. One of the most well-known poker games related to sports is baseball poker. Baseball poker takes the best elements from the game of baseball and incorporates them into a fun, stud-styled game.

  1. Dealing

    • Baseball Poker is most commonly dealt like a game of seven-card stud. Each player in the game is dealt three cards to start. The first two cards are dealt face down and the third card is dealt face up. The next three cards are dealt one at a time to each player and all are face up. The final card is dealt face down, leaving each player with a total of seven cards. Once the deal has been completed, the players show their hand and a winner is declared based on the best five-card poker hand.

    Wilds

    • In the game of baseball, there are three outs; in baseball poker, threes are wild. Whether the three is dealt face up or face down, it is considered wild. The same goes for every nine, which represents the number of innings in a regulation game of baseball.

    Extra Cards

    • For any four that is dealt face up, a player receives an extra card face down. This means that a player could receive a maximum of four extra cards for a total of 11 cards in their hand. If a player is dealt a four face down, they receive no extra cards. The four card represents the number of bases on a baseball field and the extra card represents stealing a base.

    Betting

    • Betting occurs after each round of dealing, which means a bet can take place after the first three cards are dealt, after the fourth card, after the fifth card, after the sixth card and after the seventh card. Not including the ante, a total of five betting rounds can occur during a game of baseball poker. If everyone folds but one player, the hand is dead and the pot goes to last player remaining.

    Variations

    • There are variations to the game. Night baseball is played with all of the cards dealt face down. Players cannot look at their cards and they are each turned over one at a time with a round of betting after each flip. Some variations count multiple wilds as strikes and three wilds as a strikeout, forcing the player to drop from the game.
