Symptoms of a UTI in a Man

The urinary system of an individual consists of organs such as the kidney, ureters, urethra and the bladder. Urinary Tract Infection commonly known as UTI is a medical condition that is characterized by infections (mainly bacterial infections) in any of these components of the urinary system. The bladder and the urethra are the most commonly infected parts, however this infection can spread to various other parts of the urinary system as well through the blood stream. Despite the fact that UTI is not a very serious and life-threatening disease, it can cause a lot of pain and discomfort to the patient. UTI is generally more common and prevalent in women as compared to men although the exact reason for such occurrence is not known clearly yet.

  1. Types of Urinary Tract Infection

    • UTI is generally classified into two major categories, namely Lower UTI also known as Cystitis and Upper UTI commonly known as Pyelonephritis depending on the infected areas. Cystitis is a condition that is characterized by inflammation in the linings of the urethra and the bladder of the patient. On the other hand, pyelonephritis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the linings of the kidney.

    Symptoms of Cystitis in Men

    • The most common symptom associated with Urinary Tract Infection is dysuria, which is a medical condition characterized by pain and a burning sensation during urination. Also most individuals have continuous urge for urination especially at night. Other common symptoms associated with cystitis include foul smelling urine, pain in the lower abdominal region and mild fever in some cases. However in certain severe cases patients complain of Hematuria, which is condition in which blood is passed out along with the urine.

    Symptoms of Pyelonephritis in Men

    • The most common symptoms associated with pyelonephritis in men include high fever, pain in the lower region of the back, frequent vomiting and a continuous feeling of nausea. However patients might also experience symptoms such as pain in the lower abdominal region, shaking chills and even diarrhea due to pyelonephritis.

    Most Common Cause of UTI--E.Coli

    • The most common cause for the development of urinary tract infection in men is the bacterial infection mainly caused by Escherichia Coli commonly known as E.Coli. This bacteria resides in the abdominal region of an individual (mostly near the colon) and can lead to degradation of the linings of the urethra and the kidneys thus leading to their inflammation and hence UTI.
Other common cause leading to UTI include enlargement of prostate gland in men as the enlargement of the prostate gland causes obstruction in the urethra; thus leading to incomplete emptying of the bladder, and hence can increase the risk of developing UTI.

Treatment Methods Used to Control UTI in Men

    • In most of the cases of UTI, drugs such as Amoxicillin, Ciprofloxin and Bactrim are often prescribed by doctors while treating patients. These drugs help in reducing the inflammation caused due to the infection and also help in minimizing the pain.
However, in severe cases, the patient is often hospitalized and injected with intravenous antibiotics so as to provide quicker relief from the infection.
