What Is the Eyelash Curler Used For?
While it might seem that an eyelash curler's function is self-explanatory, the fact is that many people use one without knowing exactly what the eyelash curler does. This leads to frustration with the device, as the effect doesn't seem to be worth the effort. However, with proper use, an eyelash curler can enhance lash length and cause the eyes to appear more open and bright. Does this Spark an idea?

Function
-
When the eyelash curler's handles are held with the thumb and index finger, the panels are pulled apart, creating an opening for the eyelash. Placing the top eyelashes in between the upper and lower panels, bring the index finger and thumb together, thereby closing the curler around the lash. Along with the soft, rubber strip located on the lower panel, this creates the subtle angle that causes the lash to curl.
Construction
-
Eyelash curlers consist of an upper and lower curling mechanism made of curved metal or plastic. This mechanism is opened and closed by two finger openings, which operate much like the handles on a pair of scissors or salad tongs. Inside the curling mechanism sits a rubber base pad, which softens the curling function, preventing a sharp crease from forming in the lash.

Types
-
The most basic and most-used eyelash curler is one made from metal, which is used for curling the upper eyelashes only. Some models allow for curling the lower lashes as well. This process is made possible by the reversed construction of the curling mechanism. Another type of eyelash curler is the heated eyelash curler. Much like a curling iron, the heated eyelash curler emits gentle heat, usually through the use of batteries, which provides enough heat to make the lashes more limber and able to accept curl.
Considerations
-
Many users wonder whether to use the eyelash curler before or after applying mascara. Though the stiffness of the mascara can enhance the curl from the curler, it can also cause the lashes to stick to the rubber strips that are located in the curling mechanism. This can lead to lashes being pulled from the root as the eyelash curler is pulled away from the eye, which is painful.
Effects
-
The effect on the lashes of using the eyelash curler may seem subtle, but it can be very effective. By using the eyelash curler, lashes are extended upward, away from the eyes, thus giving the appearance that the lashes are longer and the eyes are larger. Once mascara is applied, after curling the lashes, the effects of the eyelash curler are enhanced by the darkening of the lashes and the stiffness added by the mascara.
