Hormonal acne can be difficult to treat, and often returns repeatedly. It is caused by an overabundance of the body's hormones, such as testosterone, that can cause the sebaceous glands of the face to overproduce, causing acne. There are a few simple at-home treatments that may reduce hormonal acne and help the body regulate its hormones.

    1. Reduce Chemical Exposure

      • Reduce chemical exposure by not using over-the-counter acne products, which often contain chemical components that irritate and inflame the skin. Overuse of acne products will strip the skin's acid mantle, a delicate layer that regulates the oil production in the skin. For people suffering from hormonal acne, helping the skin control its oil production is vital for healing.

      Exercise

      • Begin exercising regularly to help the body regulate its hormones. Vigorous exercise causes the body to sweat, which not only helps balance the hormone levels, but also helps create and maintain the acid mantle of the facial skin.

      Healthy Diet

      • Eat a diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, including "superfoods" such as pomegranates, blueberries and dark, leafy greens. Include in your diet flaxseed oil, which helps the body balance oil production and hormone levels. Flaxseed oil can be eaten plain or added to juice or smoothies.

      Drink Water

      • Make sure to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. Water is vital for the healthy functioning of the body's organs and glands. When the glands that produce hormones are working properly, they will be balanced and regulated, decreasing the presence of hormonal acne.

      Rest

      • Try to get at least eight hours of restful sleep every night, and do what you can to reduce the amount of stress that you experience during the day. Rest lowers cortisol levels in the body, which can affect the fluctuation of hormones in the body.
