Different Kinds of Braces for Teeth

Braces have come a long way from the all-metal versions that were the standard for teenage teeth. Today, braces are come in a wide variety of materials and styles, and many adults as well as teenagers get braces to straighten their teeth. The average person wears any type of braces for one to two years, although some severe cases may require more time. Besides straightening teeth, braces can also help align the upper and lower jaws and correct an uneven underbite or overbite.

Stainless-Steel Braces

Stainless-steel braces are the old style of braces. They remain in use and are the least costly of all types of braces available today. Many people still get metal braces, since they are the most economical.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are almost identical to stainless-steel braces, except that the brackets are made from ceramic rather than steel. They tend not to leave the tooth stains associated with all-metal braces. Ceramic braces need to be worn longer than metal braces, and the cost is significantly higher. Treatment lasts a few months longer than with traditional metal braces.

Gold Braces

Gold dental braces are worn by people who are allergic to stainless steel, or who simply prefer the look of the gold. They work the same as stainless-steel braces, but cost more, since they have gold plating over the steel.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are a newer type of braces, and one of the most costly. These metal braces are put behind your teeth rather than in front, so they don't show. Lingual braces can be uncomfortable for some people, and your tongue is more susceptible to getting cut. People who have had lingual braces usually go through an adjustment period with their speech, since the braces can interfere with the movement of your tongue.

Invisalign Braces

Invisalign® dental braces, the newest braces available, are becoming more common. Made of clear, thermoplastic "aligners" that are custom-molded to your mouth, they are the most costly of all braces. A major advantage to the Invisalign braces is that they are removable. They are changed every two weeks as your teeth move. The length of the treatment depends on how often you wear the braces, but can last less than a year. Orthodontists must attend training to use Invisalign braces, so not everyone is qualified to offer them.
