About Flannel Sheets

Flannel sheets: Chances are you love them or you hate them. To some people they represent warmth and coziness on a chilly night. Others associate them with a stuffy, overheated bed. Because of the warmth that flannel sheets provide, they are most popular in cold climates. The same is true of clothing made of flannel. Perhaps for no reason other than tradition, flannel sheets often come in "loud" or rustic patterns--particularly plaids. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Definition

    • Flannel is a type of loosely woven fabric, usually made of wool, a blend of wool and cotton, or a blend of wool and synthetic fabric. Within the flannel family there is considerable variation in weights, textures and fineness, according to Textile Glossary. Flannel is usually "napped," or fluffy and raised, on at least one side as a result of its weave.

    Characteristics

    • If flannel can be defined by one characteristic, it is warmth. Flannel sheets aren't exclusively for winter nights, though. They are available in lightweight, mid-weight and heavyweight lofts, or thicknesses. Some people, though, sleep with flannel sheets year-round. Flannel also provides protection from rain, snow, ice and wind. For years, it was associated with outdoor workers such as lumberjacks, farmers, railroad engineers and woodsmen.

    Choosing Quality Flannel Sheets

    • To find high-quality flannel sheets, look for those composed of 100 percent, tightly woven cotton. You should not be able to see through them easily when holding them up to light, according to Associated Content. Yarn-dyed material is preferable to printed material, which might fade faster. Unlike other fabrics, which are rated according to thread count, flannel sheets are rated based on fabric weight. Those with a fabric weight of 5 to 6 ounces per yard are of good quality and, with proper care, should last for years, according to Associated Content.

    Care of Flannel Sheets

    • A major advantage of flannel sheets is how easy they are to take care of. They are very durable. The more you wash them, the softer they get. Typically, flannel sheets can be washed in cool or warm--not hot--water. A gentle detergent will protect the color from fading. If there are stains, use a spray spot-remover; do not rub the fabric, which can contribute to pilling and a worn look. Flannel sheets can be dried in a dryer on low heat or hung on a clothesline.

    Other Uses of Flannel

    • Besides being used for sheets and clothes, flannel is often used to line pants and shirts for an extra layer of warmth. Household items like washcloths and towels can be made of flannel, as can robes, baby blankets and other items for which softness is an asset. Flannel is one of the most popular materials for pajamas.
