Postcard Postage Requirements

A postcard is the smallest item that can be sent through the mail. Postcards are often used by businesses because they are less expensive to produce and send than letters. They also have the advantage of making a message immediately available to recipients because there is no envelope. Individuals use postcards to send a quick message to friends and family.

  1. The Facts

    • A first-class postcard stamp from the United States Postal Service costs $0.28. To qualify for this rate, a postcard must fall within the dimensions defined by the USPS.

    Size

    • Postcards can be no smaller than 3-1/2 inches by 5 inches by 0.007 inch thick and no larger than 4-1/4 inches by 6 inches by 0.016 inch thick. Items larger than these dimensions are classified as letters or large envelopes.

    Letters

    • Postage for letters is charged by the ounce. Rates for letters are 1 ounce $0.44, 2 ounces $0.61, 3 ounces $0.78, 3.5 ounces $0.95

    Warning

    • The USPS periodically raises the prices of stamps. Prices are quoted as of June 3, 2009.

    Support

    • The USPS offers online services, including the sale of stamps. They also offer an online postcard-creation program called Premium Postcard which can be found at http://www.usps.com/createmail/premiumpostcard.htm?from=createmail&page=learnmore_premiumpostcard
