Appendix Inflammation Symptoms

Appendix inflammation is also known as appendicitis. According to the University of Michigan Health System, this condition is caused by the opening of the appendix becoming blocked by either swollen digestive tissues or a piece of hardened stool. The symptoms of this condition vary from one person to another; however, there are some symptoms that are considered common signs of an inflamed appendix.

  1. Time Frame

    • Generally, the symptoms of appendix inflammation will increase in severity within a span of 12 to 24 hours. In pregnant women, children and the elderly, the time frame may be much less, often around six hours.

    Pain

    • The most common symptom of an inflamed appendix is pain in the abdomen. The pain usually starts around the lower right side of the navel. As the appendix becomes more inflamed, the pain will get more intense and begin to localize at a midpoint between the right hip point and the navel. Rebound pain, which is pain that worsens when pressure is applied to the area and suddenly released, is also a common sign of an inflamed appendix.

    Fever

    • A low grade fever, often around 100 degrees Fahrenheit is common. With an inflamed appendix, you usually won't begin to run fever until after the pain and other symptoms have begun. In children, the temperature may spike higher than in adults, sometimes over 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Gastrointestinal Symptoms

    • The University of Chicago Medical Center reports that nausea, inability to pass gas, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation and abdominal swelling are some of the gastrointestinal symptoms that are common with an inflamed appendix.

    Coping with the Symptoms

    • If you suspect that you have an inflamed appendix, a trip to the emergency room is necessary. Before leaving, it is imperative to forego the temptation to take laxatives if you are constipated, as these increase the likelihood of the appendix rupturing, which is a dangerous situation that can lead to infection. Additionally, don't take any pain killers because they may minimize some of the symptoms and markers of the condition.
