What Is Lidoderm Used For?

Lidoderm is a local anesthetic that is used to treat minor skin irritations. It has an numbing quality that can soothe a sunburn, insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, minor cuts and scratches, hemorrhoids and burns. It reduces the amount of pain information being sent to the brain by the damaged nerve endings. Always consult your physician before the use of this or other medications.

  1. Formulations

    • Lidoderm is available in many different formulations. The patch and cream are the two most common methods of application. It is vitally important to follow the manufacturer's and doctor's recommendations for the administration of this product. An overdose can occur if too much of the product is absorbed into the bloodstream.

    Overdose Symptoms

    • Overdose symptoms include irregular heartbeats, seizures or convulsions, reduced respiratory rate, coma or even death through complete respiratory failure. Skin that has been damaged has a tendency to absorb more medication than skin that is healthy and in its normal state.

    Other Factors

    • The use of bandages, plastic wrap or heat can also affect the absorption rate and should not be used unless expressly directed by a physician. It is important to use the most minimal amount of product necessary to alleviate the pain.

Do Not Use This Product if ...

    • You should not use Lidoderm if you are allergic to numbing agents, or if you have any type of damage on your skin such as sores, scratches or swollen areas. You should also not use this product if you have liver disease.

    Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

    • Currently, the FDA has predicted that Lidoderm is safe for use in pregnant women. A variation of Lidoderm, Lidocaine should not be used if pregnant or lactating.
