Job Description for a Urologist

Urologists specialize in diseases and disorders of the genitourinary tract and organs. Depending on their specialty, their specialty can include, but is not limited to: kidney, testicular cancer, male infertility, kidney stone, incontinence, prostate, bladder and neurological disorders involving the urinary system. Their job is a big one, being responsible for diagnosing problems and recommending treatment for them. A large part of their job is to interact with patients, examine them and order tests to determine their problems. They also perform surgery.

Salary Range

As with all jobs, salary is dependent upon years of experience, geographic location, credentials and employer size. However, the average salary for a urologist is $301,000 per year. Someone with little experience makes about $247,000 and someone with more experience makes $371,000, according to salary.com.

How to Become a Urologist

After graduating from high school and college, urologists are required to complete 8 years of medical school before moving on to their residency. The residency includes 5 more years of training with the first year focusing on general surgery, the next 3 years in clinical urology, and the final year as a chief resident. If so desired, the next step is to finish a 2-year fellowship to specialize in gynecology, male infertility, pediatrics, oncology or impotence. This is strictly optional. Board certification in surgery and urology are required.

Continuing Education

Education does not end once you step off the graduation line. Urologists are required to continue their education throughout their career to keep up on the latest advancements by taking courses to get recertified.

Prerequisites

In order to become a urologist, you must first attend college and specialize in a science-related field. Successful completion and passing of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is also required.
