About Previcox
Previcox is a medication for treatment of canine osteoarthritis, a disease that is characterized by the deterioration of cartilage, bones and soft tissue in dogs. Previcox combats the inflammation, joint aches, soreness, stiffness and limping associated with osteoarthritis and provides dogs with pain relief.
-
Background
-
Previcox is available by prescription only through veterinarians, and is an nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is part of the coxib class of drugs, and works specifically to relieve the extreme aches and pains that dogs experience due to the chronic condition of osteoarthritis.
Function
-
Previcox inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and curbs the production of chemicals that cause inflammation and aching. It maintains cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) instead, which assists in the maintenance of normal body processes.

Taking Previcox
-
Dogs take chewable, flavored Previcox tablets once a day, either with or without a meal. A veterinarian determines which of the two available dosages are appropriate.
Caution
-
Dogs that are allergic to firocoxib, the active ingredient in Previcox, must not take this drug. Dogs that have experienced allergic reactions to aspirin, such as hives or itching, should avoid Previcox. This treatment is not recommended for dogs weighing under 12 1/2 lbs.
Side Effects
-
Common side effects such as decreased appetite and vomiting are generally harmless and subside quickly. More severe side effects include: changes in urination and drinking skin redness, scratching and scabs; yellowing of the whites of the eyes, gums and skin; behavioral changes; and unusual weight loss. Severe side effects must be reported to a veterinarian immediately.
