An under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism) is a condition in the body where the thyroid doesn't produce enough of the hormones T3 and T4. There are two ways on can get an underactive thyroid. It can be caused either by an inflammation of the thyroid gland brought on by the person's own immune system or as a side effect to treatment for another medical condition. The thyroid's main purpose is to control the body's metabolism so people with hypothyroidism commonly experience symptoms of those with a slow metabolic rate.
