Types of Hunting Bows

Bows have been around a long time, as both hunting tools and weapons. Modern hunting bows bear little resemblance to the conventional bows that have been around for centuries. Almost all of today's hunting bows are compound bows, which use a system of pulleys and levers to reduce the amount of strength it takes to pull a bow and increase the power of the shot.

  1. Single Cam

    • The single-cam compound bow is generally easier to operate and is the most popular choice among bow hunters. The core characteristics of a single cam are an idler wheel at the top of the bow and a power cam at the bottom. The idler wheel is round and the power cam is elliptical. The power cam is what makes the bowstring easier to pull while also making the compound bow so much more powerful than conventional bows. The single-cam design is quieter and easier to maintain. Its disadvantage is that some don't deliver level nock travel, which is the bow's ability to shoot an arrow perfectly straight horizontally.

    Twin Cam

    • Twin-cam designs have two round wheels and two cams at each end of the bow. They are popular because they offer better nock travel, power and accuracy. The downside is that they are harder to maintain and are noisier than single-cam designs.

    Hybrid Cam

    • Hybrid cams consist of two cams and one round wheel. One cam is at the top of the bow and the other at the bottom. It offers the best combination of the strengths of both the single-cam and twin-cam designs. Ideally it should offer the straight-nock travel of a twin cam but be easier to maintain.

    Binary Cam

    • The binary-cam system is new and still being developed. The idea is to achieve perfect knock travel by having the two cams working in unison through control cables that connect the cams. It has already collected an enthusiastic following.

    Parallel Limb

    • The most noticeable difference between the parallel-limb design and all others is the appearance. The parallel limb has top and bottom limbs that are separate but connected to the main part of the bow structure, the riser. They can incorporate any of the cam designs. The purpose and main advantage of a parallel design is that it produces no recoil.
